Apple Mac OS X Recovery Ideas

Mac OS X startup key commands:
1. Start up in Open Firmware: Command-Option-O-F
2. Reset parameter RAM: Command-Option-P-R
3. Bypass startup volume: Command-Option-Shift-Delete
4. Open the Startup Manager: Option
5. Force Mac OS X startup: X or Command-X
6. Start up from an optical disc: C
7. Eject optical disc: hold down mouse or trackpad button
8. Start up from a network server: N
9. Reset PowerBook screen: R
10. Start up in Target Disk mode: T
11. Start up in Safe mode: Shift
12. Start up in Verbose mode: Command-V
13. Start up in Single-User mode: Command-S

The next group of recovery ideas are not in a particular order.



  • Repair Permissions with Disk Utility
  • Create a New User (with Admin Privilege), Login as New User and evaluate
  • Use Target Disk Mode to verify disk with either Disk Utility or Disk Warrior
  • PMU/SMU Reset
    unplug power
    hold computer startup button
    plug in power
    let go of button and turn on computer
  • PRAM Reset
    startup machine holding down the command-option-p-r until you hear two chimes
  • NVRAM Reset
    startup machine holding down the command-option-o-f
    at prompt enter: reset-nvram
    at prompt enter: reset-all
    at prompt enter: reboot
  • Startup holding down the Command and S key (Single User Mode)
    at prompt enter: /usr/sbin fsck
    at prompt enter: reboot
  • Delete all cache files
    Boot computer holding down the Shift key (Safe Mode)
    Locate and delete these cache files:
    /System/Library/Cache/com.apple.kernel*
    /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices
